These are all links to mapping services that may be of use when trying to locate people living and deceased.

Mapa Szukac
A great resource for locating places in Poland. This online mapping tool is Polish and includes quite detailed maps of the major cities and towns of modern Poland. Even the smallest villages can be located easily.
Google Earth
This toy from Google is brilliant for the USA. It is not so good for the rest of the world but will still help you to find larger towns and even the smaller villages you are looking for. I found the village in Poland where my father was born. It has changed very little since the 19th century.
Google Maps
This is potentially the most useful mapping tool of all. You can browse the world using the either satellite or map view or both. Sign up for a more customised experience. Once again it does not provide as much detail once you leave the USA but is still very, very good.
Multi Map
A reasonably good online mapping tool. Not so useful for smaller localities.
Map Quest
Another online mapping tool that may be useful.
The Fuzzy Gazeteer
This is a neat site that allows you to search the world for place names even if you are not sure of the exact spelling. It is not a map site as such but may prove even more useful.
New Provinces of Poland
This site features two maps side by side. These are maps of the provinces (wojewódzstwa) before and after the redistribution in 1998.
EuroWave: Warszawa
A detailed road map of modern Warsaw.
Polish Maps and Towns
A comprehensive list of links to sites containing contemporary and historical maps of Poland. A great resource but make sure your pop up blocker is switched on and working.
3rd Military Mapping Survey of Austria-Hungary
This is a brilliant resource. It was first published in 1910 and contains detailed maps of the whole of southern Poland at that time.
